Precise inversion of logged slownesses for elastic parameters in a gas shale formation

چکیده
Dipole sonic log data recorded in a vertical pilot well and the associated production well are analyzed over a 200 × 1100-ft section of a North American gas shale formation. The combination of these two wells enables angular sampling in the vertical direction and over a range of inclination angles from 54° to 90°. Dipole sonic logs from these wells show that the formation’s average properties are, to a very good approximation, explained by a transversely isotropic medium with a vertical symmetry axis and with elastic parameters satisfying C13 1⁄4 C12, but inconsistent with the additional ANNIE relation (C13 1⁄4 C33 − 2C55). More importantly, these data clearly show that, at least for fast anisotropic formations such as this gas shale, sonic logs measure group slownesses for propagation with the group angle equal to the borehole inclination angle. Conversely, the data are inconsistent with an interpretation that they measure phase slownesses for propagation with the phase angle equal to the borehole inclination angle.

Worldwide interest in shale plays has rapidly increased in recently years, thanks to the combination of horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Shale formations act as both the source and the reservoir for the natural gas and usually exhibit anisotropic properties at larger scale. Geological and petropysical studies found that the right combination of thickness, TOC (total organic carbon)...

The acoustic impedance (AI) differences between gas-sand and shale are very small in SLG gas field of Western China. Therefore the lithologic prediction solely by AI inversion will lead to multi-solution problem. Ni proposed a new elastic impedance (EI) calculation method (Ni, 2003) to deal with the seismic inversion and the prediction of lithology and fluid. In this paper, we compared this met...

The aim of seismic inversion is mapping all of the subsurface structures from seismic data. Due to the band-limited nature of the seismic data, it is difficult to find a unique solution for seismic inversion. Deterministic methods of seismic inversion are based on try and error techniques and provide a smooth map of elastic properties, while stochastic methods produce high-resolution maps of el...
